Does your bird need salt?

Birds do need some salt in their diet, but only in very small amounts. In the wild, birds get natural trace amounts of sodium from their environment, but caged birds rely on their diet to meet their nutritional needs.
Why Do Birds Need Salt?
- Sodium is essential for nerve function, muscle contractions, and fluid balance.
- A small amount helps maintain overall health, but too much can be harmful.
How to Provide Salt Safely
- Our well balance Parrot Pantry Super Mix usually contains enough sodium.
- Natural sources like our GRIT GRIND & GLOW mineral blocks or cuttlebones (which contain small traces of salt) are a safe way to provide it.
- Some fresh foods, such as leafy greens, offer a natural sodium source.
What to Avoid
- Table salt: Too much can be toxic, causing dehydration and kidney damage.
- Salty human foods: Chips, crackers, processed meats, and cheese should never be given.
If your caged birds are on a well-balanced diet, they likely don’t need extra salt. Do you have a specific concern about your birds’ diet?
